An American ramen company making instant ramen with bone broth!
So I have to admit, when One Culture Foods wanted to send me their ramen to try, I was really skeptical. Firstly, because I am not a fan of the whole bone broth trend. Secondly, I’m always hesitant about trying American ramens. However, I am pleased to say I’m pleasantly surprised with the flavor!
They have four flavors in their starter pack, which is available on Amazon. The Japanese Spicy Ramen, the Taiwanese Beef Noodle, The Chinese Chicken Noodle, and the Vietnamese Pho. Each has it’s own unique flavor so I am going to rate each of them separately from least favorite to most favorite. !
But first, just a quick discussion on why I hate the bone broth trend. When people hear “bone broth”, they automatically assume its going to be healthier. It’s true, bone broth is really healthy- if you make it at home. But if you buy the processed version where they add tons of salt and other things, its just as unhealthy as regular broth. So don’t let this packaging fool you! Just because it’s made with bone broth and has no MSG doesn’t mean its healthy by any means! But I really don’t care about that, since instant ramen is not meant to be healthy. I just don’t want people to be misled!
Chinese Chicken Noodle
This was my least favorite, ironically, since I am Chinese. Though, I believe chicken noodle soup is more popular in the Hong Kong region anyway. This had a pretty delicious broth, but because the flavor was so light and subtle, it didn’t give any flavor to the noodles—which by itself isn’t very good
They all have the same spice, sauce, and noodle package (as shown) except the Pho, which contains clear rice noodles. All you do is put it all in the contain and pour boiling water on it and let it sit for 3 minutes, super easy!
Japanese Spicy Ramen
This one was the one I was most excited about since I love Japanese ramen. I had the same problem to the Chicken Noodle one where the flavor of the broth was good (not very spicy at all though) but the noodles still tasted like packaged noodles (a little oddly tart). I loved this soup because you could really taste the roasted seaweed and garlic flavor, which are really key ingredients in Japanese ramen. I guess I just didn’t like the noodles in general since they were slightly artificial tasting. But all in all not bad!
Taiwanese Beef Noodle
Okay so this one was really freaking good. I love beef noodle soup, and I was scared this wasn’t going to do it justice. However, it had really good flavor, almost like it was homemade. This broth was also so flavorful that the flavor actually made the noodles taste good too. I think I could drink an entire bowl of just this broth. If you never had beef noodle soup before, it’s hard to describe the flavor, but its reminiscent of a pho flavor with more soy and Chinese aromatic flavor.
Trust me you will love this one!
This was definitely surprised me the most. As someone who loves to eat and make pho at home, I am always skeptical of instant Pho’s. However, this one ended up being my favorite out of the four. Interestingly enough, this one came with rice noodles instead of the normal packaged thick noodles, which I enjoyed much more.
The broth itself was super flavorful, you could taste the sweetness, the star anise flavor, and the cinnamon. I could even taste a hint of fish sauce flavor, which I love. The dried cilantro on floating on top added a nice touch as well. I forgot that it was instant for a second as I was eating this. I just wish that it came with more noodles so I could enjoy it for longer! If you end up getting this sampler pack, save this one for last- you wont regret it!
Overall, I loved the flavors of these ramens. Despite the thick noodles tasting a little funny, it was all redeemed with the delicious broths and Pho flavor one. Thank you to One Culture Foods for sending me these to try! Although they sent my the product for free, they are not paying me to write this review or anything so all opinions are my own!
P.S. I’m doing a giveaway for a set of these on my Instagram, if you want to want to enter then go check out my page ! (@hangry_amy)
